3 Ways to Send a Direct Message on Instagram
You probably know the basics of sending a direct message on Instagram. But I bet you don’t know that there are a #ShitTon of other ways to use the direct message feature. Sending a direct message is an awesome way to foster a more authentic relationship with your followers. Remember, using messages to sell, or worse spam, is a quick way to lose potential customers. Here are four different, technical ways to use the direct message feature.

Direct Message: From the Home Screen
Did something catch your eye scrolling through your Instagram feed? Share relevant and high-quality content directly with your a group of your followers in a Direct Message. When you are viewing another accounts content, you will see an arrow to click on below the picture. From there you’ll be able to send a private direct message. I recommend utilizing this feature with your sales team to strategize how other relevant businesses are engaging their customers.
Direct Message: In the Inbox
Chances are you have received a lot of private messages from your friends and followers on Instagram. Don’t forget, you can easily send messages directly from your Direct Message Inbox. In the upper, right corner on the home feed, you will find an inbox icon (it looks like a folder). From there you can send private messages by clicking on the plus sign in the upper right-hand corner.
Direct Message: From a Geo Location
Do you know that you can use the power of hashtags and locations to send a private message? This is an awesome feature if you’re traveling or looking to share your city with a group of followers. I got a lot of engagement with my recent picture of the iconic Bean sculpture in Chicago. If I wanted to share a similar post, I would navigate to #ChicagoBean. Once you’re in the hashtag hub you’ll see an arrow in the upper, right corner. Click on that to choose the individuals for whom you wish to share the message. Sharing relevant hashtags or locations is a great way to engage them in your travels or in your geographic location. If you’re hosting or attending a special event, consider how you can use this technique to engage people in your content ahead of your arrival.
I love that Instagram does not allow you to have multiple live links. Instead of being bogged down in spam, you can reach out via direct message and have a more authentic connection with your audience. Remember, followers engage with accounts for which they feel a genuine connection. Take the time to reach out to your followers, and you’ll see the #InstaLove in return.
